“Death with dignity is better than a life of humiliation” 
 

Some fourteen centuries ago on the day of Ashura, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), Imam Hussain (AS) and his little son, were mercilessly killed by a cruel and oppressive ruler in the Battle of Karbala. Although Imam Hussain (AS) was slain in the battle, his message of kindness, justice and equality lives on among people who love him, and hence, that is his real victory. 

On the auspicious occasion of Muharram, on September 9th, 2022, the Pre-Primary section at Unity College organised a Moharram activity for their tiny toddlers. It was an opportunity to explore the journey into the culture with the commemoration of Imam Hussain (AS). 

Activities performed by the students of the Pre-Primary Section were as follows:- 

• Students of class Prep made Trash Bins in order to spread awareness about the ‘Clean Juloos’ to initiate responsibility among pupils to clean up after a procession in the area.  

• Students of class Upper Nursery made a Drinking Glass to incarnate the meaning of courage and sacrifice made by Imam Hussain (AS). And how many Muslims make it a point to give water to those who, like Hussain and his companions, are unjustly deprived of. 

• Students of Lower Nursery were made to colour the dresses Black, a color that is initially worn during the month of Muharram for the purpose of mourning for the martyrdom of the Shia Imam, Hussain Ibn Ali (AS).  

The teachers also taught them the following lessons: 

• Be righteous, even if you are alone.  

• Be kind, even to your enemies. 

• Be brave, even when you have lost everything.  

• Make the processions clean 

In the end the teachers explained that Muharram, with all of its complexity, will always be a month of deep reflection for Muslims across the world. Teachers and students, in the end, prayed to Allah to bless everybody with health, wealth, peace and happiness throughout this year.
