"Be the change you wish to see in the world."
True harbingers of change put the needs of others first and constantly work towards their betterment. GOONJ, an NGO which forms a creative and locally embedded workplace in Delhi, demonstrates the importance of more sustainable forms of production and consumption. It believes in utilising vast quantities of untapped old and waste material in middle-class households and reusing it to create second hand products.
Unity College added one more pearl in its front line social services to uplift the marginalized. In collaboration with GOONJ, the College converted the charitable act of giving different items into a development resource in rural areas, focusing on receiver's dignity instead of donor's pride. The College fostered among its students, a relationship of empathy and dignity between urban and rural children by inculcating volunteerism and mindful giving practices among the students of Class I - XII. It started a collection drive of different under-utilized materials found at home like old wearable clothes, woollen clothes, toiletries, utensils etc. Students of the College, Morning as well as II Shift, were sensitized to the challenges of their counterparts and were encouraged to generate basic school materials like stationery and other items for resource-starved rural schools across India. The students and the teachers collected all the items and segregated them item wise. Some outsiders, neighbours and parents also dropped in old utensils, woollens and old clothes at the Main Gate of the College. A total of 110 bags were prepared and handed over to the GOONJCollection Centre at Krishna Nagar Metro Station Collection Hub.
Unity College always builds awareness among its students and tries to inculcate values of humanity, empathy and morality in them through the act of giving.
