    ‘Healthy debating enforces critical thinking principles- looking at things from the different angles, with increased perspective and less prejudgment.’ -Pearl Zhu Unity College held the Mushtaq Naqvi Memorial Inter-School Debate Competition 2019 with an aim to create a friendly arena of critical thinking and communication abilities for positive solutions of burning issues. The event witnessed an enthusiastic gathering of twenty young debaters from the elite schools of the city namely La Martiniere, Cathedral, Scholar’s Home, St. Francis, Hoerner, Colvin Taluqdars’, Gurukul, St. Clare’s, CMS Chowk and Unity College. The contest was a warm tribute to the legend Late Mushtaq Naqvi Sahabwho was not only an excellent teacher but also a renowned author and orator. He was a Gandhian in principles and a renaissance man in true spirit. The gesture of reverence has been generouslysponsored by his nephew Mr. Shahab Husain. The Chief Guest for the Inauguration was Rev. Fr. George Robert Qaudras, a renowned Priest of the Catholic Diocese of Lucknow, while Dr. (Mrs.) UpmaChaturvedi, Principal, AvadhGirls’ Degree College was for the Prize Distribution Ceremony. The jury comprised Mr.Syed Ikram Ali, an eminent journalist, Mr. Vasudev Bajpai, lawyer and social activist, and Dr. (Mrs.) Rupa Ghosh, English Teacher , MountCarmel College.Also present on the occasion were Mrs. Surraiya Naqvi w/o Late Mushtaq Naqvi, Prof. Tehzeebul HasanAbidi, Dr. Kalbe SibtainNoori, and Joint Secretary Mr. M. Talha.Principal Mr. Francis Castelino warmly welcomed all the guests and wished good luck tothe aspirants.Addressing the students, Fr. Qaudras said that excellence is not a destination but a continuous journey that never ends. Dr. Chaturvedi said when we listen and express, there is always hope for a better future. She exhorted the students, saying ‘learn to conquer yourself, be true to yourself, compete with yourself and have faith in yourself; and you will surely be successful.’ The event commenced with the divine renditions from the Quran, the Bible and the Bhagwad Gita. And with the lottery of topics, the debating teams got an hour for preparation prior the kick off. As the topic was ‘The development of a sound education and health system insures the nation’s security more than its military strength’, the views as well as the counter views presented a wide perspective of the present age foundation. The lively battle of witty, ingenious arguments and powerful rhetoric reflected critical as well as practical approach with credibility and confidence. The Rebuttal Round presented an icing on the cake. Indeed, the debate was so engrossing and entertaining that while the result was being tabulated, the debaters again came on the podium to justify their views, even one of them expressed that education, health and military, all the three forces work together to make a powerful nation.The Jury was very much impressed by the quality of debate. Mr. Bajpaiappreciated the debaters who put forth well researched views and they refrained from argument.
