Unity College, Lucknow organized a trip to NBFGR, ICAR, Lucknow for the Biotechnology students of ClassesXI and XII, which consisted of a group of 33 students and was headed by Ms. Huma. Rizvi and Ms Eva. Abbas. National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resource is an institute working under the umbrella of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). The institute is involved in the assessment and conservation of Fish Genetic Resource for intellectual property protection and sustainable utilization using the Cutting Edge Technology. The research facility has well-equipped laboratories for Genetic Research, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology Research, Ex-Situ and In-Situ Conservation Research that helped our students to have practical knowledge of the inside classroom lectures in a proper large scale setup. It also aided the students to gain a requisite idea about numerous avenues in the field of research and technology. The students also visited the ‘Ganga Aquarium’, where various exotic and ornamental fishes were beautifully showcased, further the students visited laboratories where respective scientists briefed them about their research work and recent developments in the field of Genetics, also a lecture was given to the students by Dr. Sangeeta Mandal on ‘Intraspecific Species Variability and Surrogacy in Fishes’.She also took the students to the DNA\RNA Isolation Laboratory, where complex instruments like the Roche (AUTOMATED DNA ISOLATOR), PCR were shown to the students and their working was explained. Students also visited the ‘Cryopreservation Facility’, where they were shown the process of preservation of fish milt and ovum using liquid Nitrogen. They also visited the ‘National Fish Repository’, where there were specimens of freshwater and marine fishes found in our country. The students were able to witness the rich biodiversity of aquatic fauna found in India and the conservation efforts done by the government to preserve it. Dr. Rejani Chandran gave a lecture on ‘Avenues in Biotechnology’ which was very informative for the students as it encouraged them to explore different career opportunities, which would be more beneficial to them in the long run.
