On July 11, 2024, Kartikeya Shukla of Saar Publications conducted a stimulating Fitzroy refresher training for teachers. The programme commenced with an engaging quiz that challenged participants to reflect on the importance of concise introductions and the evolving terminology in education from “teachers” to “facilitators” and “students” to “learners,” setting the tone for an interactive session.
Mr Shukla underscored the importance of the segmenting technique for knowledge retention and the crucial role of phonics in language development. He stressed that phonics extends beyond merely understanding stories in readers; it cultivates in learners the ability to see the world from a broader perspective. He emphasised the need for English teachers to cultivate all four core language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing to ensure comprehensive language development. Techniques like skimming and scanning were introduced to strengthen these essential skills.
The session covered the blending of systematic synthetic sounds in phonics, with Mr Shukla explaining how this method facilitates easier reading and comprehension. To engage participants, he presented two lengthy English words for the teachers to spell, stimulating critical and collaborative thinking. He called for a paradigm shift towards experiential learning, highlighting the contrast between the natural upbringing of millennials and Gen Z’s indoor confinement, and emphasising the need for dynamic, hands-on learning experiences. To reinforce phonics fundamentals, the session included a revision of 42 sounds, a discussion of 144 combinations, and an exploration of 30 rules, with some discussed in detail. Additionally, Mr Shukla taught the decoding technique in phonics, aiding learners in understanding and enhancing their language skills.
This insightful training equipped teachers with valuable strategies to elevate their teaching and foster a more dynamic and engaging learning environment for their students. The focus on phonics, experiential learning, and holistic language development empowered educators to create enriching learning experiences.
