On November 11, 2024, Unity College held a Special Assembly to commemorate the birth anniversary of Allama Iqbal, renowned as Shayar-e-Mashriq, by observing Yawm-e-Iqbal as Yawm-e-Urdu. The aim of the assembly was to honour the legacy of Allama Iqbal by celebrating his contributions to Urdu literature, poetry, and the intellectual awakening of the world.
The special assembly began with a soulful recitation of Quranic verses by Kashif Qamar (VII-B), followed by the pledge delivered by Mohd Samad (VII-B).
The Pre-Primary and Primary students presented the stirring national song, Mera Watan Wohi Hai, with toddlers dressed in regional attires, symbolising the unity in diversity of the nation. The programme then transitioned to a stunning recital of Iqbal’s poetry by Senior students. Among the highlights were Basirat Fatima (XII-D) performing ‘Ye KabhiAayeHaqeeqat-e-Muntazir’, Ata Zehra (VII-B) reciting ‘Na TuZami Ke Liye Hai’, Azam Raza (VIII-B) presenting ‘TuAbhiRahguzar Mein Hai’, Haniya Zehra (XI-A) performing ‘La PhirEkWahi’, and Bushra Mirza with ‘Pareshan Ho Ke MeriKhaak’. The enchanting verses were captivatingly anchored by ShazanMurtuza (VIII-B).
The Thought for the Day, inspired by Iqbal’s timeless couplets, urged the youth to strive for self-reliance and avoid submission to the mighty or the rich.
In his address, Principal Mr Deepak Mervyn Mathews commended the students and the Urdu Teachers for organising such a captivating assembly. He echoed Iqbal’s message, encouraging students to pray with sincerity and avoid chasing fleeting material gains. “Great individuals are the true ambassadors of peace, love, and humanity,” he remarked.
Vice Principal Mr Sachindra Bharti enhanced the poetic atmosphere with the inspiring lines: “Girte hain shahsawar hi maidan-e-jung mein, Wohtiflkyagirejoghutno ke balchale.”
The assembly concluded with the National Anthem, inspiring students to reflect on the values of unity, self-reliance, and the pursuit of knowledge as advocated by Iqbal.
