Unity College observed National Library Week from November 14 to 20, a week-long celebration dedicated to promoting reading, library awareness, and highlighting the vital role libraries play in transforming lives and strengthening communities. This initiative, introduced for the first time at Unity College, was organised by the Indian Library Association (ILA), which has been celebrating this week since 1968.
The purpose of this week was to encourage students to engage with library resources, develop a love for reading, and recognise the importance of libraries in shaping informed and empowered individuals. Throughout the week, several exciting activities were conducted for various classes, ensuring the active participation of students from across different sections. All the activities were meticulously planned and executed under the guidance of Librarian Ms Amreen Rizvi, with the able support of Principal Mr Deepak Mervyn Mathews, Vice Principal Mr Sachindra Bharti, and Headmistress Ms Kainaat Mansoor.
The celebrations began on November 14 with an Art Competition for students of classes II and III. The theme of the competition was ‘Fictional Characters,’ where students showcased their creativity by depicting their favourite characters from fiction.
On November 16, a Story Writing Competition was held for classes IV and V, where students were tasked with writing a short story of 150 words. In addition, a Quiz on Unity College was organised for students of classes VI, VII and VIII, testing their knowledge of the College's history, events, and achievements.
The activities continued on November 18, when students of classes IX and X participated in an assignment where they wrote a 200-word piece about their role model, utilising the resources available in the library. This activity allowed students to reflect on individuals who inspire them and strengthen their writing skills.
On the final day, November 19, students of classes XI and XII were given the opportunity to write an essay on ‘A Burning Issue in India’. This activity encouraged students to critically engage with current affairs and express their thoughts in a structured manner.
Through these activities, students not only developed a deeper appreciation for libraries but also embraced the importance of reading and learning. This initiative marks the beginning of many more such celebrations in the years to come, as Unity College continues to foster a reading culture among its students.
